Until the late nineteenth century, most of the people living in Prague spoke German, not Czech. The city’s own census recorded it. The Czech language survived in the countryside and in books, but not in the capital’s streets. Then the industrial boom pulled thousands of Czech-speaking villagers into the factories, and the balance flipped within a generation. By the time Czechoslovakia was declared here in 1918, the city had reinvented itself. That reversal still shapes how Prague thinks about itself. The National Theatre, rebuilt by public donation after a fire in 1881, was an early act of that new Czech city — and the castle above the river remains the largest ancient castle complex in the world.
