About Vienna

At the turn of the twentieth century, Vienna was the world’s leading laboratory for modern thinking. Sigmund Freud mapped the unconscious here. Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele shattered the rules of painting in its studios. Arnold Schoenberg dissolved the very scale music was built on. The city drew an astonishing density of minds — Wittgenstein, Mahler, Loos, Zweig — and for about thirty years they all argued, published and scandalised the same few districts. What made that possible, beyond the coffee houses and the salons, was a capital that saw itself as the intellectual centre of a fading empire. Vienna still carries that past in its institutions and its architecture, but the city itself remains the story: not one genius but a whole generation packed into a single place, thinking faster than the world could keep up with.
